Why I always #optoutside

How often do you go outside and feel like you’re outside? I mean really feel it.

We walk from our home to our car and our car to our work and back again. Windows rolled up to make sure the AC or heater is safely stuck inside with us. From time to time we sit outside if it’s nice enough to eat outdoors, as long as there aren’t too many bugs, right?

I’m not advocating that everyone has to go backpacking and live without the amenities that make you comfortable. I’m, instead, imploring you to close your eyes once in a while and feel the beauty of outdoors.

“Some people feel the rain. Others just get wet”

               -Bob Marley

For me, I visited my home of Tucson a week ago and was enthralled by the hot winds that came through on a sunny, 95 degree afternoon. I love the desert wind on my skin.

Today, I was lost in the sweet chill of fall as I walked and felt the tip of my nose and my cheeks turning red. Perhaps I was a little cold, but I loved it.

Last year on my life anniversary, that is, the anniversary of the day I attempted to end my life years ago, my sweet and soulmate of a friend took me to brunch and a short walk outside. As we left the restaurant, it began to rain, and she joined me in the thrill of experiencing rain on our skin.

Why is it such a thrill for me? Because at one point, I was about to take the opportunity away to ever feel the rain again.

That can seem kinda heavy, or like, oh geez, Jenna is getting all emotional about something simple like rain…. and yeah! I am! Because you know what? It’s those little things that we take for granted all the time that we would miss if we didn’t get to enjoy them again.

Next time you’re in the car, roll the window down and let it mess up your hair. Next time you can park a little further from your destination to feel the sun or rain while you walk, do it. Next time you “have to” take your dog for a walk, go an extra loop around the block.

Don’t just get wet; feel the rain.
